Thomas Newcomen
Thomas
Newcomen was born in February 1663 in Dartmouth, England. He was an iron
worker-toolsmith at an early age and established his own blacksmithing business.
In 1712 Newcomen showcased his steam engine. He got his idea from a little model of a steam engine from the French scientist Denis Papin and built the first full-sized engine.
Newcomen’s engine was mainly used to pump water out of flooded coal mines. It remained in use for nearly fifty years in European mines, until Watt’s more powerful engine became popular.
The engine was also classified as atmospheric engine due to the use of air pressure.
Newcomen died on August 5, 1729 in London, England.
