James Watt
James
Watt was born on January 19th, 1736, in Greenock, England. He
learned instrument making at the age of 19 in Glasgow and established his own
instrument-making business in 1757. He was soon seen as a high quality
engineer.
In 1763 a Newcomen steam engine was sent to Watt to repair. While he fixed it, Watt realized that the cooling of the cylinder and its reheating wasted energy that could be used for work. He discovered how to make the engine more efficient, but he did not have enough money to put his plans into operation. Through partnerships he financed his project.
Engines, based on Watt’s design, were four times more powerful than Thomas Newcomen’s ones. They were very popular and could be used for many purposes.
James Watt died on 25th August 1819 at Heathfield in Handsworth, Birmigham.
